Spiritual direction is the process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey. It is the contemplative practice of helping another person to awaken to the mystery called God in all of life, and to respond to that discovery in a growing relationship.
Spiritual direction is a time-honored term for a conversation with a director to explore and discover the ways God may be touching your life, directly or indirectly, in the everyday. Many people dislike the term "spiritual direction" because it sounds like one person giving directions, or orders, to another. They prefer "spiritual companionship," "tending the holy," or some other terminology. What we call it doesn't make any real difference. It is, quite simply, conversations about life in the light of faith.
In the words of Trappist monk Thomas Merton, “Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.”
Spiritual Direction is offered at various parishes on the Cape. Please call the Parish Office for more information at 508.775.5744 or email ministries@olvparish.org.
